Since being founded in 2021, RESO has made bold and important inroads to advance racial equity in Canada’s screen industry. Namely, envisioning new global opportunities for our diaspora stories, and advocating for systems change that prioritizes equal voice and funding.


New Equity Targets at NFB for Racialized Creators

RESO's October 2022 Racial Equity Audit was undertaken in partnership with VAFF, and looked at productions funded by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB).  The audit revealed long-standing systemic racial inequities within Canada’s film industry.  RESO and VAFF called on the NFB and other Canadian creative institutions, funders, and broadcasters to address the systemic and structural racism that exists within their organizations.  Specifically,  RESO called for a 50% equity target similar to the NFB's gender parity target.  In August 2023, NFB announced a 30% equity target

CRTC Hearings (November 2023) - RESO’s Vision for a Transformed Canadian Media Landscape

On November 24, RESO was invited to present at pivotal CRTC hearings in Ottawa.  Alongside colleagues from across Canada, RESO advocated for redefining "Canadian Content" and outlined a comprehensive strategy for inclusive investment in the media industry.  RESO's vision for a transformed Canadian media landscape is a call to action for industry stakeholders, policymakers, and creatives alike.  By embracing inclusivity and strategic investment, Canada has the opportunity to lead on the global stage.
